How much should you pay for a feature from an artist?

Subscribe to our Youtube channel!

So let's talk about features or collaborations, whatever. Now, what should you pay for a feature, obviously, you want to get your money worth for a feature, you want to get your you want to get a return on investment basically. So if you're going to shell out this amount of money to get a feature from this artist, you damn well want to make sure it's totally worth it, you're going to get streams out of this sales, more recognition, all that good stuff. Now, if you're just doing collaborations or features with, you know, another musician or another artists, if you're a hip hop artist or r&b, whatever. And if there's someone just as local as you, you really got to think is it worth paying them if they're on the same level as you at their local or regional whatever, I wouldn't pay them for a feature. And if they're asking for money, be like, Look, we're on the same level, I'm not going to benefit really, from by paying you for a feature I want my money's worth. But getting features from major artists is a whole new ballgame. Even if it's like an indie artists that's big, that's getting radio play, that gets tons of streams. You know, they're just popular, but they might not be like Beyonce status, but they're still popular, you know what I'm talking about, there's artists out there like that everywhere. So you got to think this artist is going to charge me, let's just pay five grand to do a feature on my song, whether they're rapping on it, they give you a verse, whatever. Or if it's a guitarist playing, or they're singing, backup vocals, whatever, obviously, they want a fee. And generally, they'll want some of the publishing. So make sure you get your money's worth out of this. Take a look at their streams, are they doing well? Are they popular right now, you know, it might not be a good luck to pay an artist who was popular 15 years ago, because they're not popular anymore. And it's not gonna bring anything to you, and in a minute, but you have to weigh your options with the whole thing. Take a look at the artists that you're potentially going to pay. What can they do for you will they bring you streams and sales and add more fame or more popularity, think about all that and make sure you get a contract. So getting the feature is just one part of it. The contract will explain how much you're paying, how much of the publishing they get. And also you want to put in this contract to be sure that they will a make an appearance in the music video. If you make one. If you're planning on doing one, if it's a major major artists, a lot of times there'll be a separate fee, just to appear in the video. So keep that in mind as well. Also make sure you put in the contract, that they will advertise that song on their social media, they'll post about it when it comes up. They'll mention it because if they don't do anything about that, if they don't even mention the song, it's not going to help you totally who's going to know about it. But if the artist mentions that themselves, like hey, I'm on this new song with such and such, check it out. That's a world of difference that that could bring in so many streams or sales, or whatever. So make sure those two things are in the contract, video appearance if you're planning on doing a video, and that they will post it on social media and promoted. These are big things. Also make sure they get their credit in the metadata of the song meaning when you say you're working with distrokid, make sure you mentioned that they are featured artists. So when it gets uploaded to Spotify, Apple and all that good stuff, they will be listed in there as a featured artist. So say someone searches for that artist name. Your song will also come up in the search because they're basically tagged and if that makes any sense. So make sure you cover all those bases. When you pay for a feature or a collaboration, whatever you want to call it. Make sure you cover all those bases. It's very important. Always do a contract, even if it's someone that's more popular than you. But they're not superstar status, still do a contract, make sure they do this stuff. It's extremely important.
